New 2016 Hyundai Tucson

2016 Hyundai Tucson Overview

New/Notable:
  • Significant updates for 2016, including new style and improved materials inside
  • New turbocharged four-cylinder engine with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission
  • Four trim levels: SE, Eco, Sport, and Limited
Back with big changes for the new model year, the 2016 Hyundai Tucson gets enhancements inside (new engine) and out (new styling) that help it to keep up in the competitive compact SUV segment.

Within just the past few years, much of the competition (including the Honda CR-V and Nissan Rogue) has gotten bigtime upgrades so it was imperative for the Tucson to keep pace. It all starts with the exterior styling, which completely changes the character of the Tucson and makes it more aggressive and attractive. Up front is a large hexagonal grille, similar to the one found on the new Sonata and Santa Fe, which is surrounded on either side by redesigned headlight clusters which can be outfitted with optional LED twin-projector headlights and LED daytime running lights. A hands-free smart liftgate is standard on Sport and Limited models for easier loading/unloading; simply stand behind the Tucson with the key in your pocket or purse for three seconds and the rear liftgate will open automatically.

Under the Hood, the 2016 Tucson has two engine options, one carryover and one new. The base engine is the same as last year, a 164-hp, 2.0-liter four-cylinder that is mated to a six-speed automatic. This combination is only found on SE models, the other three trims all feature the new engine, a 175-hp, turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder that is mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic . This engine is not only more powerful, but returns better fuel economy as well. Front-wheel drive is standard, with all-wheel drive optional.

Inside, the Tucson has better materials on most surfaces, especially those that are touched on a regular basis. The air vents have been pushed out slightly which makes the dashboard appear wider.  Mounted high on the center console is a 5-inch touch-screen that houses controls for the multimedia system; opting for navigation upgrades you to an 8-inch screen. There are lots of standard features, including stain resistant cloth fabric, Bluetooth connectivity, USB port, cruise control, and power windows/locks. Also available are powered, heated, and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, leather upholstery, Hyundai’s BlueLink telematics system, and an auto dimming rearview mirror with a universal garage door opener. Cargo room has grown to 31.0 cubic feet behind the 60/40-split folding second row, which can now recline more this year providing greater comfort for backseat passengers.

A rearview camera is now standard for 2016, joining six airbags, antilock brakes, and electronic stability control. There is also new safety technology available, including forward automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, blind spot warning, rear cross-traffic alerts, and lane change assist.
