New 2016 Chevrolet Traverse

2016 Chevrolet Traverse Overview

  • Three-row crossover that seats seven or eight passengers
  • 281-hp, 3.6-liter V-6 engine and front- or all-wheel drive
  • Adds Wi-Fi hot spot capability for 2016 via a 4G LTE data connection
Adept at carrying passengers or cargo, the 2016 Chevrolet Traverse three-row crossover adds more technology to the mix with Wi-Fi hot spot capability new for 2016.

The 4G LTE connection is provided via OnStar and requires a subscription, but the purchase of a new Traverse offers a three-month/3 gigabyte trial to test the service out. So for families that want to keep devices like tablets connected while on the go, this will be a godsend.

From the outside, the Traverse has a pretty stoic look without much drama to be found from any angle. The optional 20-inch wheels get new designs for 2016, but otherwise the Traverse is identical to last year’s model. A power liftgate is available, as are wheels between 17 and 20-inches, heated/power-folding side mirrors, and a roof rack.

There is only one engine option, a 3.6-liter V-6 that makes 281-hp in the LS and LT trim levels, but 288-hp with the addition of the dual exhaust system found on the LTZ. A six-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive are standard, with an all-wheel drive system optional. Fuel economy is estimated at 17/24 mpg city/highway with FWD, with AWD both of those figures drop by one.

Inside, the Traverse seats seven or eight passengers depending on its second row, which is offered with a three person bench or a pair of captain’s chairs. Behind the third-row there is 24.4 cubic feet of cargo space, which is good for this class. Some of the competition doesn’t have very much room behind the last row, which means you have to fold it down to fit anything back there. Standard features include air conditioning, USB ports, Bluetooth connectivity, satellite radio, and a 6.5-inch screen in the center console. Options include navigation, leather upholstery, tri-zone automatic climate control, and heated/powered front seats.

The 2016 Traverse comes with a standard rearview camera which is very helpful on a vehicle of this size. Also standard are six airbags, electronic stability control, antilock brakes, and OnStar with a free six-month trial subscription. Available safety technology includes a blind spot warning system with rear cross-traffic alerts, forward collision warning, and lane departure warnings. The Traverse performed well in crash testing, earning a full five-star overall rating from the NHTSA.
